Bespin Plaza

Bespin was the final map I completed. I had converted it from the same game as Yavin IV Compound, and over two years prior to picking up again. During those two years I had learned to 3D model, learned to texture, and learned to script in LUA, creating Vjun, Kothlis, and Czerka. But I had always wanted to make a Bespin map. It always felt like it was missing from Battlefront II, having been present in the first game. And it was the first planet which came to mind when I originally picked up the modding tools. So I wanted to do it justice. I managed to incorporate various nostalgia-laden stock props from the Bespin maps of the original Battlefront game, such as the carbon freezing chamber, the windy shaft tunnel, the cloud cars, the Millenium Falcon, and a nice 3D model of Boba Fett's ship, (created by Sereja, a talented modder). Bespin proved to be quite popular, and looking back on my map-making journey through Battlefront II, I felt that I had done all I originally set out to do.
The actual conversion process was very similar to the one I had employed previously for Yavin IV Compound. And similarly, I incorporated assets from SWBF1 Bespin levels which fit thematically and structurally with this level. In fact I went further in this department in the case of Bespin, by utilizing whole rooms, as well as critical ramp infrastructure, which all tied the map together by enabling the vertical elements to work in unison. This was an important design choice, because the game that this map was converted from had much more vertical gameplay. Additionally, I added more bells and whistles here, compared to Yavin. Having learned a tiny smattering of animation in the meantime, I deployed it here in the form of animated spaceship models flying in the background, as well as in the carbonite freezing chamber, where Han Solo can be found, the machinery repeatedly encasing him in carbonite. Additional details on the conversion process can also be found below.
